When it comes to zombie slaying excellence, there are few in the business with a track record as impressive as Techland. The masterminds behind the original Dead Island and two super enjoyable, parkour-infused Dying Light games, the Polish studio is currently cooking up a third game in the series. Originally intended to be DLC for Dying Light 2, Techland has massively expanded its scope to create a whole new experience called Dying Light The Beast, and it’s already broken a series record.
Yes, even though Dying Light The Beast isn’t a full-blown Dying Light 3, it’s really left an impression on fans of Techland’s previous projects and the best zombie games in general. While main protagonist Kyle Crane returns, The Beast takes things down a much darker and more survival-oriented path versus what we saw in Dying Light 2.
Crane has been the subject of experiments and has been trapped for 13 years, but after breaking free he is now rampaging through the all-new location of Castor Woods with a vendetta and a body full of zombie DNA. This allows you to harness your inner monster and transform into a beast of devastating power. However, leaning more heavily into survival elements means that The Beast isn’t always going to be a marauding power fantasy.
“Weapons have durability, so you’ll need to use them wisely, and firearm ammunition is scarce; even with vehicles, you can smash the zombies and that’s fun, but on the other hand the vehicle can get damaged,” franchise director Tymon Smektała told us earlier in the year. “Even the beast-like powers, you can say ‘okay, you turn into a monster and kill everyone,’ but you don’t have access to them all the time so you need to find a good moment to use them.”
This concept has gone over incredibly well, and Techland has just revealed that in the ten weeks since it was revealed, Dying Light The Beast has racked up over a million wishlists. Techland doesn’t specify that this is only Steam wishlists, so this figure appears to be spanning all the platforms the game is releasing on.
This makes Dying Light The Beast “the fastest-wishlisted game in the Dying Light franchise,” according to Techland.
Given there’s not a solid Dying Light The Beast release date or even a rough window yet, the fact that this many people are already eyeing up the game is of course a super positive sign. A glance at the Steam wishlist charts shows that the project has currently got more wishlists than juggernauts like Avowed, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, and the new Fable, even though it’s been just a couple of months since its reveal.
